02.17.10 | beer: stone 12th anniversary bitter chocolate oatmeal stout

the name alone makes my thirsty

store: stone
type: american double/imperial stout
abv: 9.20%

oatmeal stouts are tasty… and this is no exception… this is over the top flavor in a glass.

you get some beers that say one thing on the label and it tastes nothing like that… but this actually does taste like bitter chocolate (like baking chocolate) and oatmeal. and being a stout, there were flavors of coffee as well.

i would definitely get this again… i wonder if it’s still being sold? only one way to find out — i need to make a trip to my local stone brewery!

CoCoNut Porter

i'm koo koo for coconut porter!... sorry

store: stone brewing co.
type: american porter
abv: 5.70%

first time i had this was at stone… such a strange idea for a beer — coconut. surprisingly, it’s not overpowering, but you can definitely taste it…

it pours a very dark brown with a dark brown head… it tastes like coconut, some coffee, perhaps some chocolate (as most porters are wont to do)

it’s an awesome beer to drink — seems like a dessert kinda beer to me… i highly suggest this

…and so does zane:

wow — didn’t realize i hadn’t posted this up yet

well i wasn’t much of a fan of this brew… i was hoping for a refreshing mild (in flavor) taste, but it wasn’t like that.

flavor was boring… it wasn’t terrible… just didn’t make me say “ooh that’s nice” — i wouldn’t get this again.

hell, i even tried drinking it outside while cleaning my car (whilst wearing daisy dukes and uggs) — now get that image outta your head!

08.17.09 | beer: gordon biersch sommerbrau

tasted very hwheaty (spelled correctly)

tasted very hwheaty (spelled correctly)

store: gordon biersch
type: kölsch
abv: 4.6%

so this was a consolation beer after waiting roughly an hour for district 9 (and then getting turned away) with geoff.

this is currently the seasonal beer at gordon biersch and it’s definitely worth a shot — i really like wheaty beer… there’s a crisp, refreshing flavor…

it went awesome with my meal: cheeseburger and garlic fries (appetizer of beer cheese soup)… the beer cheese soup is AMAZING… the cheeseburger kicked my ass tho — i dunno what it was. i still maintain that the bun was a bit “tough” (for the lack of a better term)

oh well… it’s still good beer AND they’re on twitter! AAAAND they respond to tweets (cont’d)!

(i’m currently asking them what the abv of this beer is — let’s see how fast they respond)

UPDATE: they responded!

08.17.09 | beer: jumping cow amber ale

it didn't taste like milk surprisingly

at first taste, i wasn’t a huge fan… but since i had six of ‘em, it kind of grew on me.

it’s kind of funny — the different things i’ll notice the second, third, fourth time i drink a beer — it’s a bit on the hoppier side, but it has a slight creamy finish as you progress through the  bottle, which is nice.

i’ve ended up eating a snack whenever drinking this — try it with those lays jalapeno kettle cooked chips – that’s a good combo… well, they’re good chips overall – ha

i think that fat tire is a bit smoother to drink, but this one is alright.

06.17.09 | beer: tatonka stout

10w-30

10w-30 motor oil

store: bj’s
type: russian imperial stout
abv: 8.00%

it’s a tradition to drink this b*tch on birthdays so i had two pints of it… i was running ragged the next day (“doesn’t that mean that you’re drunk?” “no. it means i was drunk yesterday” — name that movie!)

it’s kinda funny tho — i used to loathe this beer, but now it’s not so bad. i guess my tastebuds grew up apparently (or i’ve destroyed my sense of taste, whichever one you feel applies)

this is a creamy ass stout (as stouts are wont to be) — it had a thin head (experts would say a one-finger head, but you guys are too childish for that term), but look at it in the pic… it’s a nice malty color

06.07.09 | beer: karl strauss windansea wheat hefeweizen

islands frosty mugs ftw!

islands frosty mugs ftw!

store: islands
type: hefeweizen
abv: 5.10%

gettin’ close to magical 5-0… should i try to go for 100 by the end of the year? that’s probably a bad idea…

so i wanted to try something different at islands… a lot of people, like rob, like drinking hef’s… not me — strange cuz i like witbier’s too (i just hate germans i guess)

anyway, this had the same type of flavor as other hefs… that fruitish, vanilla, clove, etc. this particular one tasted like crazy banana though — blech

the beer wouldn’t go away fast enough — even after drinking, later in the afternoon, i was burping up bananas (insert joke here)… not a fan of this one

that's the good stuff

my phone has a flash apparently!

store: adams ave. grill
type: american amber/red ale
abv: 5.20%

i haven’t had this beer in SO long… it was different than i had remembered…

drank this at chaunce’s wedding and i was pleasantly surprised.

it wasn’t harsh with a bad aftertaste. instead, this had a nice wheaty/malty taste — very refreshing, soft… very dependable

i might need to pick a sixer of this again…

i’m sure you’ve all had another famous english brown ale — i’m going out on a limb to claim that this one is better

i probably enjoyed this a lot because i drink my coffee with hazelnut creamer — so it’s a flavor i’m kinda used to…

good stuff — great beer to start the night off

05.26.09 | beer: black lightning porter

darkness!

darkness!

store: stone brewery
type: baltic porter
abv: 8.50%

first of all, if you haven’t been to stone brewery in escondido, you must… even if you don’t drink beer (yea, there are some people out there… *cough* chaunce) — it’s an all-around chill place to eat and meet with friends.

this time i was here for white mark’s birthday

i REALLY enjoy their smoked porter so i wanna try some other type of porter… this is from another local brewery to san diego: lightning. i’ve been to this particular one last year with geoff and greg — we did a three brewery crawl (ballast point and alesmith), but it wasn’t my favorite of all the places… ballast point was (tho that’s some hoppy-ass beer)

anyway… this beer didn’t really hit me as a porter — it had more alcohol taste than anything else… much like a mild tatonka (bj’s — the restaurant, not the… well whatever)

i was a thick beer — worth a shot for a first try, but wouldn’t get it the next time around
