12.18.09 | year of cirrhosis

so that was a fun year of trying out new beers… i definitely beat my goal (50) by a bunch… i really need to get a final tally (i know, andy… i’ll try)

so for next year, i’m gonna do a “year of coffee” — with the overall goal of being able to order a cup of coffee at a starbucks and not sound like a re-tard… i wanna know the lingo… i want to say “skinny” regarding my drink for some reason…

hot, cold, whole bean, ground, sumatra, java… if it’s coffee, i’m gonna try it out

should be fun… i already know some places i wanna try out for some home “brewing” — world market, trader joe’s

hell, i think i’ll even get a french press… i hear they’re all the rage

12.13.09 | product review: misc blackberry apps

i <3 my blackberry… it’s just like a computer.. i dunno why i haven’t gone the smartphone route till now…

tho the fact that it’s like a computer is kinda deadly for me — i tinker with it a ton… whether it’s changing settings or installing random apps…

i had a ton of issues in the beginning, especially when i would do a restart (quickpull) — the phone would just essentially do a BSOD

i finally figured out what was wrong — basically, the data i was restoring from wasn’t reliable… so now i know what to do if my phone dies (so i got that going for me…)

so yea, here’s a list of my favorite apps i have currently on my phone:

  • ubertwitter: by far, the best twitter client on the bberry. it loads quick and it has easy to remember hotkeys. i tried twixtreme (which sounds more like a candy than a twitter client), but it didn’t work too well for me — it’s pretty tho… but i’ll stick with uber!
  • scoremobile: i used to just go to espn mobile on the browser, but that isn’t the best… takes a long time to load and doesn’t always refresh. so i tried this out and it’s pretty good so far. really fast loading and has almost any sport you would care about. it can run in the background and refreshes too! one of the cool features is that you can mark a team as a favorite, which will have it display at the top of the list on the scoreboard
  • itookthisonmyphone: i’m all about backing important files up — like pictures.  so this app will AUTOMAGICALLY upload your photo to a secure site — you can set the pics to go to a public or private folder. you might be thinking, “but i have a microSD card” — yea… so did andy… ouch…
  • drivesafe.ly: this is more of a fun app, but can be pretty useful. it will read your incoming text messages out loud. i wrote a post previously about the fun times you can have with this…
  • bigtincan mapper: this is a cool gps type app that can give you your longitude/latitude position, which can come in handy. it can also track your routes

so those are the not-so mainstream apps out there that you might wanna give a try… i also have these more popular apps: google talk (awesome since talk got blocked at work), gmail, facebook, google sync (syncs with my google calendar!), pandora, and weathereye (shows an icon of the current weather)

11.16.09 | i’m lazy

yup… that’s it… i’m lazy!

before this year is through, i’ll update my beer list… i “promise” (see that? i put it in quotes so you can’t hold me to it!)

i prolly won’t be putting as much description in the posts since i drank most of them months ago…

what i do know is i won’t be doing another “year of the beer” thing next year…

yes, my alcohol tolerance has skyrocketed, but i’ve got a gut for days… christ… i’m at a point in my life where i get back injuries from playing one game of ping pong (i did win tho… suck it, andy!)

oh yea… i also wanna write up a review about this seidio booberry case i got (it’s not gonna be good for them…)

been crazy busy at work (for which i’m thankful, right? right?) — been part of some fun, major projects… another of which is almost done… and it looks like gorirra is gonna make a last quarter sprint with some (3) upcoming projects… let’s just say this year’s company christmas party is gonna be off the heezy (party of 2… ha)

10.11.09 | now a study in moppishness

so i watched ‘better off dead’ last night and i was surprised to see a very familiar scene…

don’t get it? well this’ll jog your memory:

i always wondered where the hell that reference came from — now i know… i still don’t get why they do it in the movie… tho it was made in a time where making fun of asians was hip and cool (like sixteen candles?)

here’s the line:

“Truly, a sight to behold. A man, beaten. The once great champ, now a study in moppishness. No longer the victory hungry stallion we’ve raced so many times before, but a pathetic, washed-up, aged ex-champion.”

i’m on to you, family guy…

08.18.09 | heavens to murgatroyd!

so if you haven’t seen “drawn together” on comedy central — it’s a pretty raunchy “reality show” cartoon… this episode pretty much sums up the whole series — it’s got asian and gay jokes… and gloryholes…

ooh and i found the episode that andy always quotes

07.31.09 | beer: birra moretti

the beer for the italian businessman

the beer for the italian businessman

store: trader joe’s
type: euro pale lager
abv: 4.60%
suggested by: debbie morales

so this is one of three different types of beers that were given to me as a ‘thank you’ gift from andy’s mom, debbie (being a computer nerd has its perks). it’s funny how reformatting a computer is like pulling teeth to some people, but to me — it’s actually fun… something about wiping a computer and making it faster than before.

apparently, i didn’t have italy up on the list so this is her contribution to the list!

birra moretti was a very clean, drinkable beer… if you’re a comparison-type person, then it kinda was on the same level as a miller lite, which isn’t a bad thing… if i had a choice between ML and CL, i’d totally choose ML.

poured into my frosted stone smoked porter mug with a one-finger head and had a gold color to it

overall, it was a good after-work beer that won’t destroy you or anything… i could totally drink it again… i accompanied it with the awesome combo from vons*

*if you’re not familiar with the combo, it’s potato wedges, mac/cheese, and chicken strips (LIKE A BOSS!)

07.23.09 | wordpress: change your home page to a custom page

so chaunce asked if i could do a small tutorial for a wordpress (wp) question he had… i’m honored that he asked me to do so… actually, i think i might start to write a bunch of tutorials that i’ve learned along the way…

and here… we… go…

this tutorial deals with the user wanting a site with a blog and pages, but the user wants a specific page to be the front page, not the blog (something similar to andy’s site, but not — since he doesn’t want his site to be full-on wordpress)

*note, i suck at technical writing, but i’ll try to fake it… i’m open to suggestions/comments for future tutorials
(more…)

07.15.09 | promote synergy!

“wtf, joe?”

yea i know… the site’s been collecting a bit of dust, which normally means that i’ve been busy with projects or i’m lazy (or both)

so what’s been up?

  • i’m still drinking beer… i’ve broken the goal of 50… and of course i’m behind on writing about them… talk about fanfare, eh? i think i want to blame wordpress for that… first for releasing 2.8, which had tons of issues (or maybe my site design had the issues… nahhhh). but then i just recently upgraded to 2.8.1, which is a lot better, i don’t get as many errors (they’re still there, but i can write posts at least)
i found out it’s mostly to do with old plugins that aren’t compatible with the new versions… which is lame-o!
  • on the topic of web development, things have been movin’ along well at work and gorirra… i think i’m running myself ragged tho — after these projects on the table, i think i’m gonna take a break somehow… doubt it tho — oh well…
  • hung out with the fpsa kids over the fourth, where our motto was “24 hours to live” — fun times…
  • padres stink, as they are wont to do… effin’ a… football’s right around the corner i guess
  • i twitter a bunch, so you can pretty much follow my going’s-ons there… (left column of my site — booyah)

is that it? i think so… everything’s been pretty much status quo…

ahh… so here’s something — chaunce, andy, and i were talking about clever ways to hide particular files on one’s computer… i’m sure you all have clever ideas, so post it out… you can be “anonymous” if you want (tho i’ll know who you are, you dirty bastard)

i know mark has a folder on his desktop that says, “mark’s 2008 tax stuff” — very clever, mark… very clever.

06.25.09 | beer: la chouffe

no... it's not david the gnome (anyone?)

no... it's not david the gnome (anyone?)

store: bevmo
type: belgian strong pale ale
abv: 8.00%

i gotta admit — i was gonna get the blue label chimay, but then saw a gnome on a bottle of beer and HAD TO get it… this was the other beer brought to the usa/spain match (maybe i shoulda themed my beer with the game… doh!)

go belgium — another great one! it’s a cloudy witbier-like flavor

the mouthfeel was like a sparkling cider — very bubbly, making it a good one to drink on a warm day

thanks to andy, i found out the meat/cheese that we had: pepper salame (they weren’t fuckin’ around with the pepper), ivernia (ireland), and iberico (the spaniard) — both cheeses were on the dry side, but not crumbly (not saying that’s a bad thing) — but they both finished creamy, if that makes any sense (i do beers, not cheese… get off me)

06.25.09 | beer: samuel smith’s nut brown ale

brown nut... ha!

sam smith's brown nut... ha!

store: bevmo
type: english brown ale
abv: 5.00%

so i’m parlaying my success with samuel smith’s brewery with this… it’s a really good brown ale — not the run of the mill brown ale, mind you.

brought this to enjoy at andy’s and adam’s for the usa v spain futbol game (who woulda guessed the outcome of that game?)

it pours and looks like every brown ale you’ve seen — dark brown with little head (like me… what?)

the taste was very sweet — i noted caramel and toffee in the flavor… wasn’t expecting that, but was pleasantly surprised.  matched with some good cheese whose names i can’t remember off the top of my head… hint hint
